Measuring the eye for surgery will take place at your outpatient visit before surgery. This is called BIOMETRY. It is carried out by shining a light on your eye, which measures the curves of the cornea, and then a small probe measures the size of the eye by an ultrasonic beam, there is no pain or discomfort. In some cases we may use a laser beam to measure the eye.
A map of the surface of the eye is drawn and the thickness of the cornea is measured. The tissue on the back of the cornea is examined and recorded. Contact lenses can cause these measurements to be inaccurate and lead to wrong results. Therefore if you are a contact lens wearer you should not wear them for 1 month before the measurements are taken as it can take this long for the cornea to come back to normal. Once the measurements are taken a computer then calculates the strength of the replacement lens that is likely to put your eye in focus after the operation. None of these measurements is painful or dangerous and your eye will feel normal afterwards. At the same appointment you will be seen by a clinic nurse or secretary and your personal details will be taken. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and any problems or worries can be fully discussed. It is best to attend the assessment clinic with the person who is going to be helping you after your operation.
On the Day of the Operation More and more patients are having both eyes operated on at the same time. Evidence is emerging that this is a very safe option for those patients who wish to get their surgery completed expeditiously. The theoretic risk of a catastrophic complication in each eye is offset by the reduced risk of a single admission to hospital which halves the risk of a hospital-acquired infection. Whether you have your surgery sequentially or simultaneously the level of risk is the same. In either case the level of risk is extremely low.
