John
Bolger has worked extremely hard over the
years and here are some of the great personal
moments that he has experienced in his career.
John
Bolger had the great honor of being presented
to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and to take
her on a tour of his Ophthalmic Department.
She met patients who had had their operation
the day before and watched a video of him
operating.
John
Bolger has been featured on both BBC and Independent
Television for his cataract work. He have
also been nominated as one of the five most
efficient doctors in the NHS by the Daily
Mail. He has appeared live on the Richard
and Judy Show.
He
has been Scientific advisor to Öertli
Instrumente GmBH, manufacturers of High
Technology Ophthalmic instruments. Also worked
with Duckworth & Kent to develop a new
injector for Alcon’s Acysof lens.
Cataract
Surgery in the Community
In
1996 in Kings Lynn I opened the first cataract
treatment centre ever in a GP practice. In
this service the patients are seen and assessed
in the practice. They then have their cataract
operation carried out by me in the practice
operating room. To date over 2000 patients
have had their operation in this way. Our
audit results are exemplary. In 1997 I was
runner up in Doctor of the Year Award as a
result of this venture.
In 1998 Frank Dobson
gave us a certificate of "Highly Commended"
for innovation in primary care.
The
unit is profiled in the government document
"Action On Cataract" as an example
of best practice.
